Why Do I Do That

Spread the love

Romans 7 vs. 15 (NIV)
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate I do.

So you have been trying to change the way you eat, and you keep coming up empty, you keep failing, and you don’t know why the cravings don’t stop.  You are constantly bombarded with this overwhelming desire to sit down and eat, not just anything but something pleasant. Also, the more you desire to conquer your bad eating habits, the stronger the temptation to run back to what you know and love.

As a young child, I spent a lot of time home alone. One of my happiest memories was on Friday I would go to the store and buy a can of red soda -pop and a bag of Doritos, then on Saturday mornings I would get up and turn on my favorite cartoon, pop that can and bag open and enjoy, there is nothing like a combination of fat, sugar, and salt, with distinctive flavors.

The value I placed on these two items was more than the 25 cents it cost me back in the day. It was a company to my loneliness, it gave my boredom something to look forward to, it helped me to calm down when I was stressed, and it gave me a boost when I was depressed. It even numbed the sting of my anger about why I could not stop craving it in the first place.

The truth is, walking away from bad eating habits feels like you are walking away from a good friend, except your friend is why you have high blood pressure, prediabetes, heart disease, acid reflux and a host of other ailments. Why are you wrestling?  You are agonizing about walking away from a friend when that friend is a stone, cold killer. So if you really want to change your eating habits than its time to see the unhealthy things you put in your mouth for what they are, your enemy. Then and only then will you find the strength to walk away finally.
